Lisa Guernsey has some interesting points - many of which I agree. I feel a need to respond to this as I continue to formulate my ideas around best practice of ICT as a tool in ECE. <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This seems to be an odd question, given its 2014 and iPads infiltrated our society back in 2010. However, I still believe, its a good question.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Technically it’s a rectangular screen with finger touch sensitivity. It can connect to the world wide web via a wifi (wireless router), or in some cases via the cellar mobile network. It has two cameras (front and back), speakers and a microphone all inbuilt into the screen. It comes with a base set of applications or programmes - called ‘apps’. Apps can be purchased and loaded onto the screen via an online store. Apps are used to access and create digital information. Many apps are free but contain advertising. More specialised and ad-free apps are purchased relatively cheaply.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px; min-height: 13px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Given all these technical capabilities, the iPad enables us to connect to <i>almost</i> anyone, anywhere who has a regular phone, mobile phone, computer or ipad. It enabled me to send instant photos to the children of Manaia Kindergarten (New Zealand) from the heart of Kruger National Park (South Africa) - while tracking an elephant. It has enabled me to find my way through a rural township in South Africa that had not street lights. Its capabilities seem almost endless.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px; min-height: 13px;">

<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-stroke-width: initial; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 13px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Apple, the company that designed, created and brought the iPad into our homes describes the iPad as its "most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device”</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">If we are to accept the iPad into our lives, we must endeavour not to be trapped in the rectangular screen - but to dream big, explore widely, and embrace the magic.</span></div>

I have resigned from my position as Head Teacher at Manaia Kindergaten. It was time! I had been at Manaia for 10years. I continue to love the kindergarten, its community and the teaching team, but it was time to refresh my batteries and experience new adventures.<br />
<br />
I am currently working as a relieving teacher for the Northland Kindergarten Association. It has been the best professional development I could have hoped for and I highly recommend that others do the same. If you have a teaching job and just want to explore other ece's - talk to your management about a few days of professional development to visit other kindergartens or centres. Don't pop in for a few hours - take 3 days and visit 3 different centres. At the very least, do that.<br />
<br />
As I move from kindergarten to kindergarten I am being asked to provide some ICT support - which of course I am happy to do in the context of the day. I am amazed how much ICT comes up in my practice - particularly trying to capture children's voice. I don't need to encourage children to share their stories, children I am new to are eager to tell me their stories. I video, take photos and type their words onto the photos when appropriate. Wherever possible I try to use the kindergarten's cameras, iPods and iPads. I have been surprised at the technology kindergartens have and how they are using it.<br />
<br />
My interest has been spiked. What 'latest' technologies do early childhood centres have in new zealand and around the world? And how are they using their technologies?<br />
<br />
How about you and your ece?<br />
What do you have in the way of digital technology and how confident do you feel you are using it?<br />
Are the digital technologies offering you and the children the extended learning opportunities you had hoped for?<br />
<br />
Please be honest and if you want to remain anonymous you do have that option when posting a comment.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
PS: Another change in the air - its election year. Lets make that count!! More on that later.Beverly Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08429304628360932037noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8238763463826457310.post-73624467093038644532013-03-19T16:29:00.000-07:002014-07-06T22:00:54.154-07:00Above the standard - intrinsic motivation.Currently in New Zealand the National Government is encouraging schools to run more like businesses. They have introduced standard tests and they rate schools according to 'best standard performance'. These standards supposedly hold schools and teachers accountable for the work they achieve. The National Stardard tests and ratings supposedly show families which schools are the best schools.<br />
<br />
The push to conform to standards is a rising tide that is drowning teacher's passions and squashing student's intrinsic motivation. Learning to a formula and rewarded with 'carrots' and gold stars will only create robots.<br />
<br />
I think the National Government and 'Big' Business has it wrong.<br />
<br />
What if the current business model (in big business and now in schools) strips people of their intrinsic motivation, and productivity decreases to a standard level? Dan Pink's TED talk makes a case against the standard business model.<br />
<br />
What if the model changed to something more in tune with people's intrinsic motivation and passions - because we can't go on doing the same standard things for 'carrots' and gold stars.<br />
<br />
So what are <b><i>your</i></b> children learning in school?<br />
Why are <b><i>your</i></b> children learning the things they are learn in school? Is it enough?<br />
Who is <b><i>their</i></b> motivator?<br />
<br />
What is motivating them to learn more and rise above the standard?<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="350" mozallowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" src="http://embed.ted.com/talks/dan_pink_on_motivation.html" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="450"></iframe>Beverly Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08429304628360932037noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8238763463826457310.post-11336690708157787522013-03-10T18:02:00.000-07:002013-03-19T16:39:16.268-07:00Music composersAt Manaia Kindergarten we are updating our ipad and ipod touches with musical instrument apps. After listening to Kevin Honeycutt at the Teachers for Teachers workshop, the team as a whole was once again inspired to explore new ways of doing things.<br />
<br />
We have contemplated installing complex music systems to go with our ipad and ipods. However, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5GO4vLLO4w" target="_blank">Kevin Honeycutt's </a>use of a simple amplifier and splitters would do perfectly for what we are hoping to achieve at Manaia.<br />
<br />
So a search for some worthwhile music apps has been undertaken.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://itunes.apple.com/app/melody-bell/id300668487?mt=8" target="_blank">Melody Bells</a> and <a href="http://www.appsforhunger.com/Apps_For_Hunger/Home.html" target="_blank">Piano</a> have already been successful apps at Manaia. Piano has particularly supported children, not only to explore notes, but to follow simple instructions to create a musical piece. The smiles on faces has encouraged others.<br />
<br />
But the ipad/ipod technology allows us to think outside the square. Although 'real' instruments are amazingly beautiful, there are apps that allow you to create music in a new, different and beautiful way. One I explored today is <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/musical-squares/id586538267?mt=8" target="_blank">Musical Squares</a>. It's interface is simple and plain - but somehow mesmerizing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxGNRHitdFmhattjXhtkfi68MnYf_i02gYz6nCD5jMO4KzHWPrD6ANTlrdurlwiloGbXmDit7YDFfoCt-G5ig' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bloom/id292792586" target="_blank">Bloom</a> is an artistic variation of Musical Squares. It creates a visualisation that is almost hypnotic. Apart from the difference in its interface from Musical Squares, Bloom allows the music to eventually fade, allowing new music to be added - and so the piece continues to be composed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwg4Np8rVbtMdvXYloTyb-hbDx_Mk4A8e8xCkQt6Gbm4KoAvyTW8doGrJhJ_3srKgL12vTqC8BYyRift6wP9w' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br />
<br />
I look forward to using these apps in our final mat times of the day (as well as throughout the session). In our final mat time, we sit, read and share books with one another, whilst listening to relaxing music. Currently children are able to choose the quiet music. They have drawn their own pictures to match the songs they enjoy and loaded them onto the ipod (this makes it easier for them to identify the different music). With Musical Squares and Bloom, children will be able to CREATE their own relaxing music. I look foward to exploring this with the children.Beverly Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08429304628360932037noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8238763463826457310.post-28287886537174887962012-10-09T13:18:00.000-07:002012-10-09T13:50:31.171-07:00Efellows for life<p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5uhAdWD_6NNSDeRE0PaCxvX530saoXcRrEFisL3ZI6xRxztk18TxZ2mgIW8UkCJ2tsokRJX46J-8Ic82wCSIlBePNR_RklJvhdbfLQmu8zKcoXzPEnS4Bpb-DKlX6ViNtmntPaY7QeUM/s1600/photo-731172.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5uhAdWD_6NNSDeRE0PaCxvX530saoXcRrEFisL3ZI6xRxztk18TxZ2mgIW8UkCJ2tsokRJX46J-8Ic82wCSIlBePNR_RklJvhdbfLQmu8zKcoXzPEnS4Bpb-DKlX6ViNtmntPaY7QeUM/s320/photo-731172.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5797414853441441010" /></a></p>What an inspiring bunch of awesome educators who have been on this incredible journey with me. There are many creative apps for the ipad, but what is different about <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/moma-art-lab/id529886963?mt=8" target="_blank">MoMA Art Lab</a> ($4.99 NZ) is its link to the Museum of Modern Art (New York). Using 'simple' shapes and techniques children can explore colour, balance, shape whilst creating a work of art. Designs can be complex or 'simple' - and both stunning. Children can explore the processes of creating abstract modern art, and they can save their final creations to print and display. The MoMA Art Lab encourages group collaboration through the use of 'Create an exquisite corpse'. Based the age old game where friends draw different body parts on folded paper, children can create a surprise drawing together... ideal for a kindergarten setting. Above is the design created by three Manaia Kindergarten children. You can see them in action using the app together, on the <a href="http://www.manaiakindergarten.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Manaia Kindergarten blog</a> - <a href="http://manaiakindergarten.blogspot.co.nz/2012/08/drawing-together-with-moma.html" target="_blank">Drawing Together with MoMA</a>.</div>
</div>
<br />
The Art Lab tools that are provided for creations mimic techniques used by the Great Artists, and introduce young children to great paintings. Below is a YouTube clip highlighting many of the creative attributes of MoMA Art Lab for the iPad.<br />

<br />
I have discovered a great blog by <a href="http://eceducation.blogspot.co.nz/" target="_blank">John Funk</a>. I enjoyed his recommendation of the book <a href="http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/Press-Here-Herve-Tullet/9780811879545" target="_blank">Press Here</a> by <a href="http://www.herve-tullet.com/fr/boite-20/Biographie.html" target="_blank">Hurve Tullet</a>. <br />
<br />
I have previously heard about this book. I thought I'd wait for the ipad app Press Here - LOL. However, on further research, I watched a youtube video of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kj81KC-Gm64" target="_blank">children interacting with this book</a>. I realised that an ipad app would clearly contradict the message of the book. And, I believe, it would be a contradiction of Hurve Tullet's philosophy.<br />
<br />
Hurve Tullet's books inspire me. I found a great video interview (2min) with Hurve Tullet, about his book Doodle Cook. As an artist and educator, this interview inspires me. I can imagine the possibilities with our children and I look forward to further exploring this artist, author and his books, with the children at Manaia Kindergarten.<br />

Do a Google search "apps for young children" and inevitably you are provided with a selection of app icons showing cartoon characters, alphabet flash cards, peekaboo and nursery rhymes. Some of these are great (though never the flash cards!!) But our children deserve more! Our children are capable of more! I recently took an evening session in astronomy for children at our local school on camp. Unfortunately it was cloudy, so we turned to technology. In preparation for this, I had downloaded apps onto the Manaia Kindergarten ipad to use with the school children. The session went brilliantly (but more of that on another post). I left the apps on the ipad and took it back to Kindergarten. I did not alert the children to these new apps - I left them to make their own discoveries. Two weeks later, Otis's Nan brought this picture in to Kindergarten.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_yHw_smThcOB-Nkzek8At1N2BW-XQhjpfbh_9J8uaKtWYmBqMe837Gg3FZDt89kMQCR_hW7cv8lzsp2nG3hPvhoBulOoxh3KxGm6Ujc-5TXdE565F9Fjx_ctrIY1eEo8V8VaPyy12Ejc/s1600/Otis+Orbit.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_yHw_smThcOB-Nkzek8At1N2BW-XQhjpfbh_9J8uaKtWYmBqMe837Gg3FZDt89kMQCR_hW7cv8lzsp2nG3hPvhoBulOoxh3KxGm6Ujc-5TXdE565F9Fjx_ctrIY1eEo8V8VaPyy12Ejc/s400/Otis+Orbit.JPG" width="290" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Otis told his Mum, "The sun is in the middle of our earth and the earth is going around and round the sun. The planet on the outside is Jupiter."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Wow - When did he learn this? His family had not spoken to him much about the solar system, but he does have a natural curiousity towards stars and planets. He had found the apps, explored them, and set up his own learning goals. Check out the app Otis explored.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once you have zoomed into Planet Earth's solar system - you can manipulate it for a better look...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinjwLGOFEIBIC2bo4_P8I_b4Y5HdrFYa__GtR5mBkvehpLiH9Vu43oeAAXFFbRlAybAiPV7zj__dqtPsOZBCeTmGtHGW5qGA1vqNdyO9L88FdsUJttVFaO69Au6klJmQhMJrYyxcN9a9E/s1600/exoplanet+2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="272" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinjwLGOFEIBIC2bo4_P8I_b4Y5HdrFYa__GtR5mBkvehpLiH9Vu43oeAAXFFbRlAybAiPV7zj__dqtPsOZBCeTmGtHGW5qGA1vqNdyO9L88FdsUJttVFaO69Au6klJmQhMJrYyxcN9a9E/s640/exoplanet+2.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Otis clearly had some knowledge of the solar system - such as knowing about the existence of planets, the names of some planets - and he was able to further extend his knowledge by exploring the ipad app Exoplanet. This is a sophisticated app and through this app you can learn about other solar systems - enabling teachers and parents to learn alongside their children. There is huge potential for Otis to further extend his knowledge of solar systems because this app isn't "just for children". It doesn't limit knowledge to information we THINK children can handle.<br />
<br />
I continue to search for apps that support children's interests and current knowledge....<br />
<br />
In the meantime check out Exoplanet - an added bonus is that its free.<br />

I was inspired by their desire and passion to learn, and to approach technology in early childhood education in a new way. As a final summary we concluded the following:<br /><br />1. <b>ICT is a tool</b>. Use it to engage children with yourselves, each other and learning opportunities.<br /><br />2. <b>Technology for a purpose</b>. ICT should be used throughout the curriculum. Scatter technology (computers, laptops, cameras, ipads) where it will be used for a purpose - digital microscope near a collection of bugs, natural resources, science specimens or close to the outdoors. Laptops with typing programmes in an area promoting literacy, cameras where children can easily access, take a photo of their name, and download photos when returned.<br /><br />3. <b>Start with one thing and do it well</b>. The latest technology on the block can be cool, exciting, trendy to start with (like the ipad) - consider its long term appeal. Choose the thing that you think you can move forward on and commit to it. Make sure its achieveable.<br /><br />4. <b>Technology is not a babysitter</b> - its a tool that should encourage collaborative learning and teaching. Engage in technology WITH the children.<br /><br />5. <b>Encourage children/students to be the teacher</b>. You can learn a lot from them. Technology shouldn't be stored until YOU have mastered it - open it with the children and learn together. Encourage children to push buttons. Its unlikely to blow up. Learn from their desire to explore.<br /><br /><div class="fb-like" href="http://ictece.blogspot.com/2011/12/latest-technology-advice-for-educators.html" send="true" width="450" faces="true"></div>Beverly Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08429304628360932037noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8238763463826457310.post-91381514535079035962011-09-02T02:51:00.000-07:002011-09-02T02:54:32.158-07:00National Standards: Assessment vs EducationNeed one say more:

Watching desperately, making sure they don't fall behind their age group, that they pass their assignments, test and exams.<br /><br />What do you want for your children?<br /><br />You may wish for your child to graduate from high school, go to university, gain an impressive qualification and enter a well paying job - to be a doctor, a lawyer, an architect.<br /><br />What do YOU want for your children?<br />IF they achieve the above -<br /><br />Do you want them to love what they are doing?<br />Do you want them to be able to communicate well with bosses, colleagues, employees?<br />Do you want them to have friends?<br />Do you want them to be kind hearted?<br />Do you want them to be generous?<br />Do you want them to like themselves? To be fit and healthy?<br />Do you want them to continue to explore new ideas and initiatives?<br />Do you want them to be happy?<br /><br />Taking care of ourselves. Having friends and good relationships with colleagues. Confidently contributing and communicating our ideas. Researching and learning, exploring new concepts and ways of doing things.<br /><br />THESE are the building blocks of a great citizen, a confident healthy happy person.<br />THESE are the people we want to work and play with.<br />THESE are the skills that children FIRST need to learn. Without them 'academic achievement is a long hard lonely slog. With these skills children develop a passion for learning, communicating, sharing ideas.<br /><br />The building blocks begin in our young children - fit and healthy, surrounded by friends, variety of communication skills, ability to contribute, and a desire and passion to explore and continue learning. These are the goals of the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum.<div><br /></div>I suggest they be YOUR goals for your children.<br /><br />We remind ourselves of these things for ourselves through romantic, heartwarming youtube videos. I have some programming skills. They are fairly old school programming skills, but I believe my skills are upgradable.<br /><br />Where do I go to learn to write apps? Any advice welcome.Beverly Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08429304628360932037noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8238763463826457310.post-49423296913333054532011-06-09T19:52:00.000-07:002011-06-09T20:15:54.044-07:00Free 2 B U - Caroline CaseyThis woman speaks to my heart. What a powerful personal story.<br /><br />An inspirational talk by a woman my age, <a href="http://www.kanchi.org/blog/category/caroline/">Caroline Casey</a>. At the age of 17 she discovered she was, and had been since birth, legally blind. She didn't let that stop her. She wasn't about to admit it. She climbed to the top of her game. She wasn't going to let labels get in the way. Then 17 years on, it caught up with her, it smacked her in the face. And when she had to acknowledge it, she found she was released to be who she wanted to be...<br />Her continued success, different from her initial success is again the result of rejecting labels/barriers. Hear her story....<br /><br />We should be free to acknowledge our hurdles and use them to conquer barriers, not build them. We ALL have hurdles. Those that are big are only big because of the way an individual sees and copes with their own hurdles. When we are free 2 b - we can be anything. Any policy I'm involved in writing, talks about differing abilities because we all have weaknesses and we all have strengths.<br /><br />Thank you <a href="http://www.jakigt.podbean.com/">JakiGT</a> for sharing this TED story on your podcasts.<br /><br /><object width="446" height="326"><param name="movie" value="http://video.ted.com/assets/player/swf/EmbedPlayer.swf"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"/><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><param name="bgColor" value="#ffffff"></param> <param name="flashvars" value="vu=http://video.ted.com/talk/stream/2010W/Blank/CarolineCasey_2010W-320k.mp4&su=http://images.ted.com/images/ted/tedindex/embed-posters/CarolineCasey-2010W.embed_thumbnail.jpg&vw=432&vh=240&ap=0&ti=1116&lang=&introDuration=15330&adDuration=4000&postAdDuration=830&adKeys=talk=caroline_casey_looking_past_limits;year=2010;theme=celebrating_tedwomen;theme=women_reshaping_the_world;theme=not_business_as_usual;theme=new_on_ted_com;theme=master_storytellers;event=TEDWomen;tag=Business;tag=Culture;tag=activism;&preAdTag=tconf.ted/embed;tile=1;sz=512x288;" /><embed src="http://video.ted.com/assets/player/swf/EmbedPlayer.swf" pluginspace="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" bgColor="#ffffff" width="446" height="326" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" flashvars="vu=http://video.ted.com/talk/stream/2010W/Blank/CarolineCasey_2010W-320k.mp4&su=http://images.ted.com/images/ted/tedindex/embed-posters/CarolineCasey-2010W.embed_thumbnail.jpg&vw=432&vh=240&ap=0&ti=1116&lang=&introDuration=15330&adDuration=4000&postAdDuration=830&adKeys=talk=caroline_casey_looking_past_limits;year=2010;theme=celebrating_tedwomen;theme=women_reshaping_the_world;theme=not_business_as_usual;theme=new_on_ted_com;theme=master_storytellers;event=TEDWomen;tag=Business;tag=Culture;tag=activism;"></embed></object>Beverly Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08429304628360932037noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8238763463826457310.post-69477401699650674672011-06-04T02:57:00.000-07:002012-05-12T19:18:49.400-07:00iPad experiences with young children at Manaia Kindergarten<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
At Manaia Kindergarten we bought out the ipad for the first time on Thursday to explore the universe and find the Matariki stars in the sun lit sky through the iris of the ipad. (See blogpost about <a href="http://ictece.blogspot.com/2011/05/ipad-for-manaia-kindergarten.html">SKYVIEW</a> app). This was a little tricky with a group of 30 eager children. Each child wanted a closer look. The Sun and the planets proving a big hit over the small stars.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>THE 1st QUESTION</b> raised from my first experience of the ipad with young children is: <br />
<div>
"How can I connect the ipad (with apps running such as SKYVIEW) to our digital projector?<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>A Boy's Experience</b></div>
<div>
Later in the morning I noticed one of our quiet boys looking a little lost and struggling to connect with other children. As I talked to him he asked me if he could see the stars again. When I handed him the PRECIOUS ipad, he confidently took it from my hands and swung it up to the sky. We were sitting at outside tables, on a slab of concrete. I HELD MY BREATH, .... AND .... trusted him.</div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Immediately others came over to him and they began to talk about the stars, the sun and the planets - swinging the ipad above their heads as they talked.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
They wanted to explore more!!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/magic-piano/id421254504?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4">SMULE</a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So we tried out <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/magic-piano/id421254504?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4">SMULE</a> together. WOW - the music they played - tapping on the screen together, trying to catch the glowing green balls - then swirling the balls to make patterns in the music. I have been considering purchasing a MAC keyboard - but this was much more fun. SMULE combines music and art. It is all about process and experience, and not about an end product. GREAT!!</div>
<div>

<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline;">I really thought they would stick with the music - but we only had the one free song - Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (which btw we had learnt in Te Reo (Maori) that morning). However there was obviously only so much of that song and the art they could handle.</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline;"><b>THE 2ND QUESTION</b>:</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline;">What budget does a school/early childhood centre set for ipad apps? And how would you prevent children deleting them accidentally?</span></div>
<div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline;"><b>The Watermelon Dog</b></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline;"><b>by an ipad Sculptor</b></span></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline;"><a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/phyzios-sculptor/id318411544?mt=8">SCULPTOR</a></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline;">The children wanted to explore more. By now J had one boy buddy and five girls hanging over his shoulders. But he was beaming with his new found magic and the ipad.</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline;">So he began his first role play as a SCULPTOR.</span></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
This app provides children with choices of wood or vegetables to sculp. They are probably American woods - it would be nice to apply different names and grains to the wood, to represent New Zealand indigenous woods - but hey - it is a start.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
J choose to sculpt a watermelon. As he tapped he talked about the bit flying off the watermelon and it took a few moments for him to realise that by tapping he was changing the shape of the melon. He quickly learnt that by holding his finger down on the screen and moving it, he could rotate his sculpture in 3D. He did this regularly, seemingly assessing his work. Four other children created sculptures that morning. And it made me think.....</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Questions no.3</b></div>
<div>
WHY am I encouraging children to sculp in 3D on a virtual cold screen? </div>
<div>
WHY am I not rather giving them a piece of REAL wood?</div>
<div>
We do of course provide woodwork opportunities for children. WAS I today encouraging them to sculp on a screen rather than risk injury with REAL tools?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And then again....</div>
<div>
I had fun sculpting on the screen - so WHY should I deprive children of that similiar experience?</div>
<div>
AND more importantly top designers usually design on a screen first (these days) before investing time and money on real resources.</div>
<div>
WHAT would this virtual experience do for young children's REAL life experiences?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>The Great thing about the ipad</b></div>
<div>
After the children had completed their virtual sculptures - we emailed the images straight from the SCULPTOR app to their parents. No cameras, no downloading, no uploading, no exporting or converting. I look forward to hearing their parents responses.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; color: #0000ee;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5614324687011350322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLrpieP-9NujsP3UUbo4feoYFREqloWJ_wpRe4YugFbdVCj8fQCDJEQNbfrQ3fnd_X8-xrEYTLH8WQVrQlWLHTLg0kxKp-JPgNhkSBLE4TNruML1uocbrcMMhDNhha-zl0m34Jgz7CNzk/s320/snow+princess.png" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 320px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center; width: 245px;" /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline;"><b>The Snow Princess</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span class="Apple-style-span">by an ipad SCULPTOR</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>The OTHER Great thing about the ipad</b>.</div>
<div>
It is a tool, integrated into a programme that provides children with a range of experiences.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>ANSWER to QUESTIONs No3:</b></div>
<div>
After two of the girls, who didn't really know eachother, had completed their virtual sculptures, chatted about their designs, giggled as they moved the image in 3D, and emailed their final images to their parents..... I saw them 10 minutes later - at the wood work table - earmuffs on, goggles over their eyes, drills rotating, and wood in their hands - SCULPTING!!!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And J made new friends today!!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In just one morning session - I see a whole lot of potential for this little screen.</div>

<br /></div>
Wow - thanks to all five people who responded to my last post. You all encouraged me to think and I DO intend to respond. Please watch this space.<br />
<br />
In the meantime - we have bought an <a href="http://www.apple.com/nz/ipad/">ipad</a> for Manaia Kindergarten. I picked it up on Friday and am currently setting it up. I continue to advocate that technology - including the ipad - should be integrated into the kindergarten curriculum and not a 'study' on its own. I also believe that technology should help us to teach differently. In one comment from my latest post, it was suggested that 'real' flashcards provide the tactile real experience for young children. Well - I'm not really an advocate for flashcards be they 'real' or virtual. I believe in using experiences and opportunities, interests and strengths, to teach children about real life problem solving techniques, skills and knowledge. <br />
<div>
<br />
My most FAVOURITE app for young children - <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/skyview-free-explore-universe/id413936865?mt=8">Skyview</a><br />
With the Skyview camera open, and capturing images of the environment around you - it also graphically shows you the placements of the planets, sun and star constellations, satelites, hubble telescope, and international spacestation. What amazing conversations this should encourage? What vastly different learning journey's this single app could take us on? (I will hopefully keep you up-dated). Information about each are recorded at the bottom of the screen and when you touch a planet, you are shown its trajectory. Children - even on cloudy days - can watch the rise and set of the sun and moon. For NZers - we can watch <a href="http://www.taitokerau.co.nz/matariki.htm">Matariki</a> (pleiades) rise above the horizon - even though it is first viewable at a time when our Kindergarten children are fast asleep. They will be able to watch it on the ipad with their friends.</div>

If you have any apps that fit our purpose - please share in the comments below.<br />

Well wouldn't you know it!!. My modern brick phone DIED!!! Missing a few important dates as a result of an aging and unreliable battery, ensured its fate. If you read my post on <a href="http://ictece.blogspot.com/2010/06/adaptable-technologies-and-global.html">Adaptable technologies & Global issues</a> you will understand - I BOUGHT AN IPHONE!!<br />

Yip I succumbed - with a spring in my step on the precipice of a new learning adventure.<br />
<br />
What an adventure it has been. I have loved the iphone4's ability to record quality videos and to quickly and easily share these videos with family and friends. It was an excellent tool to record the birth of our puppies and invite the world to watch them grow. More exciting than that - my sister bought an iphone4 - and with WhatsApp has begun to share videos of my niece and nephew growing up on the other side of the world.<br />
<br />
Sitting at work, the videos drop into my pocket, and I am able to share them with children and colleagues instantly.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;">Can I use my iphone in my Kindergarten?</span><br />
No doubt about it. I haven't as yet. But that has more to do with personal issues - such as "I use and spend a lot of time and money on the kindergarten, when the kindergarten should purchase its own technologies". I am sure MANY other ECE teachers experience similar domestic discussions on the same topic.<br />
<br />
So <a href="http://manaiakindergarten.blogspot.com/">Manaia Kindergarten</a> is filling in the paper work to justify the purchase of its own ipad. A bigger version of the iphone, I assume it provides similar benefits. I have searched iphone apps for Early Childhood education and been bombarded with Flash Card apps. SURELY there is more to this technology than perpetuating ancient learning techniques such as flash cards. I don't want to teach the Manaia Kindergarten children how to trace letters on the ipad with their fingers. And we have plenty of technologies that offer them games.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;">Kindergartens need more from iPad apps</span><br />
So I am in the hunt for apps that will support children's explorations.<br />
• Bug, plant, animal identification apps,<br />
• Video recording<br />
• Picture txting apps (using pics rather than text)<br />
• Voice to text txting app<br />
• Instant blogging apps<br />
• Google Doc editing<br />
• Fundamental movement apps - showing best practice for sport movements, and side by side photo comparisons for children to self assess.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;">Apps we should be using with young:</span><br />
• Google maps on excursions<br />
• Skype or Face-to-Face calls<br />
<br />
<br />
What are your experiences of iphone/ipad Apps for young children?<br />
What apps have you found that support 21C teaching and learning theories and skills?<br />
Maybe some of the above already exist - if so please tell me in the comments.<br />
<br />
<br />
I look forward to hearing your app reviews and to learning from your experiences.Beverly Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08429304628360932037noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8238763463826457310.post-76584987629911320532010-09-02T20:36:00.000-07:002010-09-02T21:07:49.412-07:00Web2.0 is NOT the future of EducationJen from Ingenuity has set out this debate. Many teachers ARE excited about Web2.0. It is probably, rightly perceived, that teachers are saying "Web2.0 is the future of Education". It certainly offers education a whole new dimension of collaboration. As a teacher or parent, what are your thoughts about the hype surrounding Web2.0 as the future of education? Watch the video below and hear the argument. I respond below with my thoughts on the debate. Contribute your thoughts by clicking the COMMENTS button below this post.<br /><br /><object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fys5CdRRHxc?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fys5CdRRHxc?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object><br /><br />Web2.0 certainly offers a number of benefits to education. Manaia Kindergarten has engaged the tools of Web2.0 over the past 3-4years with great success - we blog, connect with other educators and students around the country and the world, - we skype, chatting with family members and teachers in Whangarei, throughout New Zealand, and internationally. In my personal life I am active on Facebook (see the list on the right to view my personal involvement in Web2.0), and Facebook has connected me with friends and family around the world. I learn from them, debate with them, highlight online topics of interest to share with them, and engage them in my philosophy on education regularly.<br /><br />Web2.0 is not the future of education for me, that statement is a little outdated - it is definitely the present of education. So in that sense it is not the future of education - I hope there is more than Web2.0. BUT if educators have not yet explored the validity of Web2.0, will they be ready for the next step. Engage in it now, so that the tools and language are familiar enough to move to the next advancement in technology.<br /><br />Web2.0 is not the future of education - collaboration is the future (or present for some). It is not the tool, the Web2.0, that is or is not the future - it is what Web2.0 enables us to do in education that is important. It enables us to collaborate, empower children/students, communicate in a way never before possible.<br /><br />Web2.0 is not the future of education nor will it be unless teachers and educators are given the space and respect to learn the tools. YES - sometimes it takes time for adults to remember all the passwords, click the right button at the right time, remember new processes. Teachers need to be empowered to learn. Web2.0 wont work in education if the teachers are critized while they learn. Young people remember passwords, they know the processes - these part of their everyday world. But I feel Jen could give adults a break, and be proud that they are taking the time and trouble to learn new ways of doing things.<br /><br />Web2.0 is not the future of education - open minded students and teachers are the future. I embrace Web2.0 and use it as a tool for my 3yr and 4yr old students to broaden their skills and knowledge. And I will embrace the 'next' thing if it benefits learning opportunities.<br /><br />Web2.0 is not the future - it is NOW.Beverly Kayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08429304628360932037noreply@blogger.com3
